ICHCA International Limited (IIL)

ICHCA International Limited (IIL) is a membership organisation established in 2003 dedicated to the promotion of safety and efficiency in the handling and movement of goods by all modes and during all phases of both national and international transport chains.

It has 900 members in over 80 countries and members consist of ports, terminals, port authorities, container depots, academics and cargo specialists. It is an independent, non political, non-governmental and non profit distributing organisation. It has an influential and international membership in many countries, spanning all five continents, with National Sections in Japan and the USA.

Its membership represents a substantial cross-section of senior corporate executives, leading consultants, academics and authorities in the world of cargo handling and transport. It can provide management information and exchange of technical data relating to methods and techniques in the industry whilst being conscious of future trends and training needs.

It arranges opportunities for its membership to meet at international, national and regional levels at conferences, symposia, meetings, workshops and other social occasions for the interchange of information. It can assist with both formal and informal contacts in the industry.

It produces publications for members, including bi-monthly electronic newsletters with the latest cargo handling news, an annual review incorporating topical trends and developments, plus individual “best practice” publications gained from the research and study activities of its Panels. The latter cover a wide variety of issues and technical matters.

It participates in and monitors the activities of the regulatory bodies of government, non-governmental and inter-governmental organisations to ensure that practical difficulties encountered by its membership are voiced at the earliest discussion stage in the formulation of agreements, rules, regulations and laws. Following a recently new appointment to the Board, IIL will liaise more closely with the international agencies and also develop training initiatives for business management levels.

It promotes policies and projects that will improve the safety and efficiency of physical handling of cargo in all transport modes.

It enjoys non governmental (NGO) consultative status with a number of inter-governmental agencies whose programme of work impacts on the activities of the international cargo handling and transportation industry. Perhaps the chief amongst these are the International Maritime Organization (IMO), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), United Nations Economic and Social Councils (ECOSOC) particularly for Europe (UNECE), Asia Pacific (ESCAP), European Council of Ministers of Transport (ECMT), European Commission (EC), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It also maintains observer and liaison status with a number of international industry bodies and takes an active role in several international industry fora.

These organisations include the International Standards Organisation (ISO), European Standards Organisation (CEN), International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH). Following a recent new appointment to the Board, IIL will liaise more closely with the international agencies and also develop training initiatives for business management levels.

It makes important contributions to the debate on a wide range of industry issues around the world and, in many cases, has a direct effect on the formation of international regulations and legislation.
